Rev. Sheldon Nix, Ph.D., M.S.W.
Certified Business Coach
In 1973, at 17 years old, God spoke to me and called me to be a Pastor. With the image of my grandfather Rev. Andrew Nix, Sr. in my mind (I thought he had died in the pulpit and I didn't want that to happen to me), I said "No!" The bed I was lying on shook, and He said again, "I want you to be a Pastor." Again, I said "No!"
I thought, like Jonah, that I had gotten away with it. While on the "high seas" I got training and experience in various specialties:
Got my Masters in Social Work and learned how to deliver practical services to people;
Got my Ph.D in Counseling Psychology and learned how to understand people at a deep level and transform their whole way of thinking and responding;
Graduated from Coach University as a Life and Business Coach and learned how to change people's lives more quickly;
Built a $2 million a Year Nonprofit from scratch, learning how to do grant-writing and grow a large organization.
As with the Apostle Paul's background, God is using all that training and experience, but continued to insist that I plant a church and Pastor it for 12 years.
Pastor John "Jay" Finney
Life Coach || CEO || Licensed Financial Coach
So in 2004, God "found" me and spoke to me again while driving home from a movie. In tears, I realized I had to yield to His call. With my whole heart.
At His direction, I launched Life Worth Living Fellowship with Rev. John Finney and a team of believers.
Pastor Finney and I believed in the power of expository sermons teaching the Word in depth but in a way that relates to real life struggles, so we were known across our city for our raw, real, and creative sermon series.
We also felt that it was important to engage a new generation with creative videos that helped introduce the sermons in relatable ways. So with the help of an ABC News producer who was a member of our church, we filmed many movie shorts (long before YouTube or TikTok!)
We also conducted many workshops to hundreds of people in our community, including in schools, community centers, and at our church. This brought us into contact with lots of people.
With the benefit of what we know now 😐 we did several things wrong. The three biggest mistakes we made that you are probably also making are:
If you watched our creative services on local television where we broadcast them -- and thousands and thousands of people in our city did -- back then you were probably already Christian and just liked our messages. One stranger told me "I love your preaching because you preach on things my pastor doesn't."
I'm glad I blessed her and many thousands of others but I realize now that you have to have an ONGOING system to attract the unchurched, and you have to attract them where they are. Television, prayer walks, street outreach, even workshops alone were not enough.
As creative as our sermons were, they did not go deep enough into the psychology and false beliefs of non-believers and the unchurched. They did not tear down the specific strongholds of the mind and take captive every thought to the obedience of Christ that are keeping them away from the Lord and our church. They did not speak the language of the unchurched and unsaved, so they ignored it!
We did plenty of workshops plus men's and women's ministry events, but those were events. We did not set up a program that would keep us engaged with unbelievers and unchurched folks.
#1: TRAINING
#2: SERMONS
These folks will likely take their time, making a lot of "stops" on their way to you. They will want to look at your posts, watch some videos you put up, and over time be open to an invitation to a workshop.
Then maybe they'll go to your Women's Ministry event if the topic is interesting to them. And then maybe check out your Sunday service!
Our Outreach Workshops are designed for these people. More on those in a moment.
who stopped going to church (maybe because of Covid or got bored by traditional church) but are very open if the topic interests them.
And the "almost there non-Christians". The Holy Spirit has them ready for an invitation. They don't need to make a lot of "stops" before they come check you out.
Our Seeker-Sensitive Sermon Series is for these people! Let's talk about those now.
PowerPoint: We give you compelling PowerPoint slides for when you preach these messages (because this is a visual age). This helps get you better noticed because it takes time to cut through the noise and stand out as a pastor. Also use this PowerPoint template in your mid-week Bible study.
Exposit a Biblical Story: These expository (almost verse-by-verse) messages--with the slides--make the Bible come alive for people.
Show How God Changes Lives: These messages help people see HOW God can change their life the way He changed the life of the Biblical character. "Show and Tell".
Start using these to get interest in this sermon series. You get the graphics which you can edit so you can put your picture, your address and dates, etc. and suggested text you can copy and paste, then edit to suit your exact message! Then ask your members and other people to share them as well.
Another way to give people information about the sermon series. Edit the details on Canva. Then get your people to pass them out widely.
Note: We suggest you promote both your Sunday message on a topic and your mid-week in-depth teaching on that same topic.
Edit these fliers (also on Canva) and then get them printed and handed out
#2: SERMON SERIES
1) The longer, slower track for non-Christians and "De-Churched Christians" who are not yet interested in a Sunday service but do want help. And "de-churched" Christians who used to go to church but stopped and are jaded or cautious.
These folks will take their time, making a lot of "stops" on their way to you. PowerPoint Slides: We give you compelling PowerPoint slides for when you preach these messages). This helps get you better noticed because this is a visual age and people scrolling through their feed will be more likely to pause and see what you're doing. Plus you will stand out as a pastor. Also use this PowerPoint template in your mid-week Bible study.

Training: I give you extra in-depth training on the Seeker-Sensitive Sermon Series approach based on my over 40 years as someone who has preached these kinds of sermons and taught Christian counseling and life change strategies to counselors and Pastors.
Facebook/Instagram Promotional Posts: Start using these to get interest in this sermon series. You get the graphics which you can edit so you can put your picture, your address and dates, etc. and suggested text you can copy and paste, then edit to suit your exact message! Then ask your members and other people to share them as well.
Postcards: Another way to give people information about the sermon series. Edit the details on Canva. Then get your people to pass them out widely. Note: We suggest you promote both your Sunday message on a topic and your mid-week in-depth teaching on that same topic.

#3: OUTREACH WORKSHOPS
Workbook: The entire guide and worksheets are in one document. You will walk them through the guide using the PowerPoint, adding that "preaching/ministering" part as you go along introducing each section.
PowerPoint: The PowerPoint guides them through the handout. It doesn't add new content as you want to get them familiar with the main concepts that are in their workbook.
It should leave them engaged, satisfied, but also unsatisfied, knowing they need more help!
That's how quickly this strategy can work (although NOT always that fast)!
Facebook/Instagram Promotional Posts: Start using these to get interest in this topic. You get the graphics and suggested text so all you have to do is copy and paste, then edit the text to suit your style! Then ask your members and other people to share them as well.
Postcards: Front side attracts their attention and the back side gives them the basic details and then tries to get them to go to the Information and Registration Page. Edit these (on the free version of Canva) and then get them printed and handed out. They are the easiest off-line way to get your people to hand them out to their friends, family members, co-workers, or anyone else they think might be interested.
NOTE: You will find that your members are often more willing to share postcards to an event that is not specifically "religious". They don't feel as afraid of rejection but feel they are doing people a possible service. Go figure, but that's what laypeople often think, I have found.
Fliers: Edit these (also on Canva) and then get them printed and handed out. They can be placed in barber shops, salons, nonprofit organizations, and other places (because you are not promoting something "religious" but a "community program".
Sample Registration Sales Page: If you do decide to set up a page for people to pre-register (which I recommend and which we obviously provide to the pastors in our full program), then here is excellent language for you to copy.
